Choosing the best tDCS device can be tricky. As tDCS continues to grow in popularity, more and more devices are being made available to consumers. One of the most frequently asked questions we get at Caputron is what tDCS device do we recommend. At Caputron, our goal is to be impartial but at the same time, stand by the devices we provide. To help you choose which tDCS device is right for you, we have compiled the below list not based on personal preference but by the devices respective sales numbers to be able to provide you a community generated list of the most commonly purchased commercial tDCS devices.
The Activadose tDCS device is the only commercially available tDCS device that bears an FDA clearance. Originally cleared for Ionotophoresis, this device is built to medical grade standards, used in tDCS publications and utilized every day in a clincal setting by physicians. This device is a premium tDCS device that carries a premium price tag. The device has a built in timer, features an automatic ramp up/down of current and an intelligent internal voltage regulator that maintains a constant current output as skin resistance continuasly varies during stimulation.
The Focus V3 is the only commercially availabe tES device that features tDCS (Direct Current), tACS (Alternating Current), tPCS (Pulsed Current), tRNS (Random Noise) stimulation and an all new tRCS (Rippled Current Stimulation). The focus V3 and V2 are currently the only commerical tDCS devices that feature multiple waveforms. This device has a built in rechargable battery and can be programmed for SHAM stimulation. The device keeps a log of sessions to prevent overuse. Like the Activadose, this device is equipped with a built in timer as well as automatic current ramp up/down. The focus V3 device is CE marked in accordance with ISO/IEC 17050-1.
The Focus Go Flow is the most affordable tDCS device loaded with many features. Do not be fooled by the size of this device, the Go Flow has a built in timer, automatic current ramp/up down and internal voltage regulation to ensure constant current delivery. The Go Flow is approxemtly the size of a quarter and is the msot travel ready device available. The devices comes in a variety of starter kit configurations, such as the Go Flow Pro which comes with a headband or the Go Flow Sport which comes with a baseball cup with pre-cut 10/20 EEG locations in addition to an arm strap to make the DARPA montage readily available. Regardless of the starter kit accessories you pick, the device itself is the same. This is a great into level device with many of the necessary features of a tDCS device. The accessories can always be upgraded at a later time to those used in research studies. Focus devices purchased directly through Caputron are supported directly by Caputron
The BrainDriver tDCS device was designed to be a simple to operate stimulator. This tDCS device has a built in timer as well as current ramp up/down. The device features a backlight display where a user can quickly choose the current output, .5 mA, 1 mA, 1.5 mA or 2 mA as well as the time, 20 min or 30 min. The device comes ready-to-use out of the box with a starter kit containing the battery and all necessary accessories. Unlike other tDCS devices which typically feature a square electrode, the BrainDriver device utilized a circular electrode typically used in Cranial Electrotherpay Stimulation (CES) devices.
The Focus V2 is a commercially availabe tES device that features tDCS (Direct Current), tACS (Alternating Current), tPCS (Pulsed Current), and tRNS (Random Noise) stimulation. The focus V2 device is CE marked in accordance with ISO/IEC 17050-1. Replaced by the new Focus V3, supplies of the Focus V2 are limited. For those wanting the ability to stimulate via multiple waveforms, the V2 is a great device that provides you access to those waveforms at a lower cost than the V3.
