What Does a TENS Unit Do?

4 min read

We at Caputron love helping others discover and expand their potential, all through the power of completely safe and controlled stimulative technologies. Among them are TENS units, specialized devices that are used to address a number of conditions and complications. Today, let’s explore the fundamentals of what a TENS unit is, how it works, and why it’s useful to so many individuals.

Defining TENS

TENS stands for transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation. These devices are designed to deliver a series of controlled, subtle electrical charges, administered through electrodes that attach directly to the skin. This current interacts with the human nervous system, acting as a means of blocking pain signals from reaching the brain. At the same time, endorphins are released as a result of this stimulation, which help to further alleviate pain.

Common Components and Features of a TENS Unit

Consisting of the main device and companion adhesive electrode pads, most TENS units feature a number of commonplace and highly useful features. These are ideal for administering the amount of electrical stimulation you need to feel better. From dedicated intensity dials to frequency indicators and integrated safety systems, the main device’s features contribute to a more beneficial and comfortable user experience. Best of all, there are no side effects to worry about other than a potential allergy to the electrode pads or skin irritation, both of which are temporary. There are also hypoallergenic electrode pads available as an alternative if needed.

How TENS Units Can Help

A TENS device is essentially a massager. TENS units such as those sold by Caputron are capable of mitigating temporary or chronic pain, though it’s important to note that this varies depending on the severity of the pain an individual is suffering from. Labour and menstrual, post-operation, and joint pain can be addressed with such devices, as can neck and back pain – a great benefit for those attempting to correct their posture while enduring various aches and soreness along the way.

Pain stemming from various long-term conditions may potentially be alleviated with TENS devices as well. Such conditions include arthritis, fibromyalgia, spinal cord injuries, multiple sclerosis, injuries from sports or vehicle accidents, and more. Speak to your doctor to determine whether they recommend TENS as an appropriate aid in addressing physical pain.

Who Shouldn’t Use TENS Units?

If you’re pregnant, suffer from seizures or epilepsy, use an electronic implant and/or have heart issues, we recommend against using TENS units to treat pain. This also applies to our other devices including those with CES and tDCS capabilities. Otherwise, you should be fine but it’s best to check with a practitioner in advance of using these devices.

Also, consider that prolonged use of a TENS unit at the same setting may reduce the effectiveness of the stimulation administered. This happens because the nervous system slowly adapts to the treatment over time, increasing in resistance to allow pain signals to travel through. Therefore, alternating treatment sessions between varying intensities is an optimal approach if you intend to use a TENS device indefinitely.

Caputron is excited to offer a wide range of high-quality, durable and dependable TENS units and companion accessories. From electrodes to main units, kits and more, we have something for every price range and intensity preference.
